What are the advantages of using oReader for digital publications?

The oReader was built to provide a way to read beautifully designed digital publications on multiple platforms, without the need of installing any additional software. By using the power of the web, we provide an easy way to view digital publications from within your browser. And even though it runs in the browser, once it has been cached it can be opened any time, even when not connected to the internet!

Why shouldn't I just use PDF?

PDF was made with analog media in mind. It still retains the concept of pages and fixed layout, something which has no place in digital media. While easy to make and distribute, reading it on anything but paper can be quite cumbersome. Especially on smaller screens, will reading a PDF become a very frustrating endeavor.

Why use oReader to read ePubs?

Publications made for oReader are ePubs, just optimized for use with our reader. The difference lies in how the publication is distributed and what kind of content it was designed to handle. Normal ePubs require a seperate reader to view the publication and are focused more on pure textual content, whereas ePubs made for oReader have the reader software embedded (making it click-and-read) and allow for more advanced and visually pleasing content.

Must the oReader be downloaded by end-users?

No, the reader software is embedded in the publication. All that is required is a modern web browser.

Which browsers are supported?

The following browsers are supported:

  • Safari (mobile and desktop) v9 or higher
  • Edge (latest version)

What features does the oReader offer?

The oReader offers a wide range of features such as an annotation system, an intuitive navigation system, a search function and can be customized by the user. By using the HTML5 standard, the oReader provides many options for displaying rich content. Think of integrating rotatable 3D models, video and audio. For scienentific publications one could think of:
-Dynamic tables; tables with lots of data only show a subset of the data and provide the means to search and navigate the table data. The data itself is loaded from a (XML) file.
-Reference sources using hyperlinks. A hyperlink is linked to an exact position in a digital publication.
The above features combined with various other features not only illustrate the broad applicability of the oReader, but also it's usability.

Does the oReader provide an annotation system and can they be shared?

Yes the oReader has a built-in annotation system. Furthermore, annotations made with the oReader can be shared using our o-Share cloud service.

What is XY-navigation?

XY-navigation refers to the way a publication is navigated within oReader. Navigating sideways changes the current section/chapter and navigating up and down scrolls the current section/chapter.

Can I use oReader when offline?

Although oReader is a web application, once cached, it can be viewed offline.

Are my oReader publications up-to-date?

Yes, when you open your oReader publication, the reader will check if there are any updates. If there are any, they will be downloaded and you will be prompted to reload the reader and apply the updates. Ideal for publications which update often, such as educational textbooks and manuals.

Does the oReader use the ePub 3 standard?

The oReader publication format is based on the ePub 3 standard. This means that all ePub 3 publications can be made compatible for use with the oReader.

Can I share my publication via Facebook, LinkedIn en Twitter?

Publications can easily be shared via Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter. Just paste the URL in any of the aforementioned social media applications and all relevant metadata will automatically be retrieved. Once shared, others can simply click the link and start reading.

What are the oReader hosting options?

The oReader is a web application integrated into a website. The oReader can be licensed for use with an existing website, thus leaving the customer in control of the hosting. This option is mainly intended for customers who intent to host many oReader publications, for those who only have one or few publications can opt to choose for our oReader hosting service. In which case oReader will take care of the hosting.

Does oReader offer custom-built solutions?

Yes, oReader offers customized solutions for those who require additional functionality or have special requirements.

How much does an oReader license cost?
